THE COMPARATIVE STUDY ON THE MENARCHE IN SCHOOL GIRLS

Abstract
This study was carried out to analyze the variables related to menarche. The total number of 1, 248 high school girls was drown from 2 high schools in Sung Nam city in Kyunggi province. For the data collection, the survey was conducted during March 20April 25, 1987 by using questionnaire on the menarche.
The major results of this study are summarized as followings;
1. The mean age of school girls was 17.6 years. An average age of menarche was 14. 14¡¾1.04, and 68.5 percent of the girls experienced menarche between 13 and, 14 years old.-99.8 percent of the school girls experienced menarche at survey time. In the month and season of menarche appearance, the highest monthly incidence of menarche occurred in August and December, and the incidence of menarche was greatest in the winter (32.3 %) and summer (31.5%) and lower in the fall and spring. For the six months after menarche, 33.6 percent of the 1,248 girls had regular menstrual cycle and 66.4 percent of them had irregular cycle.
2. The menarcheal age shows a decrease as compared with the past years in Korea. It is difficult to make a comparative study of that trend, because of difference in survey areas and population by the researcher. In the relationship between menarcheal age and menarcheal experience rate and mean age of the population surveyed, it shows in direct proportion each other. So, the researcher; should set up a criterion of age range of the population in comparative, study of menarcheal age by area and year. Many studies have been made of the relation¢¥ between season and the advant of menarche, and the findings have been more and less consistent. ; There are much room for consideration between season and the - advant of menarche, because these findings were mainly collected by recollection, and were not take into account of the time of birth.
